As the Assistant Technical Director, you will play a fundamental role in ensuring the implementation of all technical aspects of RLT’s production season and theatre operations. For each RLT production, you will work closely with contracted designers to create technical drawings from design sketches and coordinate technical preparations for rehearsals and performances. In coordination with the Production Manager/Technical Director, you will also develop each production’s build schedule and oversee shop operations and the creation of scenery.

Essential to the work we do at RLT is our community of volunteers, and in this position you will take the lead in the recruitment, training, and management of all technical volunteers. This will include running regularly scheduled work calls, supporting and educating volunteers in the execution of production designs, and organizing and appointing volunteers for various coordinator, crew, and production support positions. You will also organize and complete strikes for each production with volunteer support.

Some of your additional responsibilities as the Assistant Technical Director will include:

  • Supervision, maintenance, and upkeep of the scene shop, shop and safety equipment, and production areas.
  • Technical assistance and/or supervision as needed for RLT’s education programs and special events and for external group rentals of RLT performance spaces.
  • Fulfilment of prop rental requests and management of prop rental policies and procedures.


Hours and location: Schedule will be coordinated with the Production Manager/Technical Director – night and weekend hours will be necessary and most work will be on site.

Salary: $36,000
This full-time, exempt position includes health, vision, retirement, and life insurance benefits and flexible PTO.

Reports to: Production Manager/Technical Director


You have at least 2 years of scenic construction experience and working knowledge of rigging and safety practices. Experience with lighting and sound systems is also encouraged, but not required.

You have excellent customer service and communication skills, both oral and written, as well as the ability to effectively interact with individuals of varied ages, backgrounds, and abilities. If you have experience supervising and training multi-level crew, that’s a plus.

You have strong computer skills and the ability to use existing technology to achieve desired results.

The Assistant Technical Director will also need a valid driver’s license, be able to lift 50 lbs, and be comfortable working at heights (this position routinely moves equipment and ascends/descends ladders).
