About the company
Dubbed one of “America’s Best Regional Theatres” (American Theatre Magazine), PlayMakers’ mission is to produce relevant, courageous work that tells stories from and for a multiplicity of perspectives. We believe that theatre can have a transformational impact on individuals and entire communities and are committed to the work of becoming an antiracist organization accessible to all. PlayMakers serves as the professional laboratory for UNC-Chapel Hill’s Department of Dramatic Art and is devoted to nurturing and training future generations of theatre makers. As a professional theatre in residence at a major research university, PRC is positioned to lead the way integrating the making of new art with the creation of new knowledge.
PlayMakers’ seeks a passionate and collaborative Associate Artistic Director (AAD) to join the largest LORT company in North Carolina as we work to revision a future that is inclusive, anti-racist and driven by the passion and inspiration of our artists, staff, students and community. The AAD’s primary responsibility is to advance and facilitate the artistic vision of the theatre in conjunction with the Producing Artistic Director (PAD). The AAD will work to serve the needs of the resident company while identifying, maintaining and developing relationships with local, regional and national artists who will advance the theater’s mission. The AAD plays a significant role in season planning, casting, line producing and outreach and may direct/design/act in one show in PRC’s season as well as direct or design another with the graduate students or Summer Youth Conservatory. The AAD supervises all new play development, special artistic programming or company events as assigned. The AAD collaborates with Development and Marketing by contributing artistic content for both long-term strategy and day-to-day actions surrounding grants and other fundraising efforts, as well as marketing initiatives as they connect to the public portrayal of PlayMakers. The AAD may teach in the Department of Dramatic Arts as requested.
